| Newaygo county was named after a Chippewa Chief. Because of the areas many beavers, raccoons and deer a fur trader named Michel Charleau and operated a trading post at the point of Muskegon and Little Muskegon Rivers. For a long time Newaygo's industry was logging. Around 1882 agriculture became a major industry. Over half the county is in the Manistee National Forest. Home to the Gerber Baby Goods. |
