In 1764 Chief Pontiac ended his seize of Detroit. Oakland's early settlers found large areas of land. Orchard Lake was a favorite of Chief Pontiac. The large island in the center of the lake was called "Me-nah-sa-gor-ning," which meant "Apple Place", since it was covered with apples. Oakland county emerged in 1818 where the Saginaw Trail crossed the Clinton River. The settlement was started by Stephen Mack and his Pontiac Land Company. A sawmill was built the next year and the town was named Pontiac. The town of Royal Oak is believed to have gotten its name when Territorial Governor Cass sat under an oak there, and recounted the story of the Royal Oak in Scotland which hid Prince Charles from his enemies. The great agriculture of Oakland County diminished as the industrial and residential growth began.
